In 1801, the year of this sonata, he could still hear and still perform. He just knew what was coming. The trouble had started a few years earlier. That summer he finally wrote to two friends about it, the first time he'd put it in writing to anyone. One detail from those letters stayed with me. He said composing was when it bothered him least. What made it unbearable was being around other people, where he had to pretend. So this piece comes out of a strange window. He knew, and almost nobody else did. The following year he wrote the letter where the despair finally shows. This came first.
