Every frame, read scroll speed: v = scrollY minus last frame's scrollY. 2. Smooth it so it doesn't flicker: speed += (v - speed) * 0.1. 3. Turn it into 0 to 1: s = Math.min(Math.abs(speed) / 40, 1). 40px per frame = full effect. 4. Blur sideways only with an SVG filter: feGaussianBlur stdDeviation = s * 12 on X, 0 on Y. 5. Split the colours: feOffset dx = s * 6 on the red channel, -s * 6 on the blue, merged with feBlend mode screen. 6. At s = 0 the image is perfectly sharp, so the product reads the moment they stop. 7. Filter the images only. Blurred headlines just look broken. 8. prefers-reduced-motion: s stays 0.
