How to run your own private ChatGPT for your whole company (nothing you type leaves the building) ow to run your own private ChatGPT for your whole company, on one little computer in the office. I built this for real on a test Mac first, so the clicks, menus and numbers are what you'll see. The problem: every client file, salary and contract your team pastes into ChatGPT goes to someone else's servers. Ban it and they use it on their phones anyway. So give them one that lives in your building. What you need: A Mac mini. On a 24 GB test Mac, the brain got pushed out of memory on every document question, so 32 GB is the floor (about $1,800). For around 25 people, the 64 GB Pro (about $3,200). The brain: OpenAI's free gpt-oss-20b (14 GB, business use allowed), plus qwen3-embedding 0.6b to search your documents. Name that size in your prompt, or Claude grabs the 4.7 GB one. Ollama, the free engine. In its settings, Cloud off, Context length 32k. Open WebUI, the ChatGPT-looking app, with a login for everyone. An external drive erased as APFS (Encrypted) for nightly backups. Tailscale ($8 per person a month for business). The app only listens on the Mac, so everyone, office or home, comes in through it. One group and one knowledge base per team, Public or Private. Claude Code does the setup with four prompts, before any client file is on the Mac. Then you sign it out. Measured on my test Mac (M4 Pro, 24 GB): about 35 words a second, first word in about 2 seconds. Document questions took half a minute or more. If you want to learn the skills behind this, like how AI answers from your own documents and how to build things by talking to Claude, I teach them inside my community, in Foundations, Claude Code From Zero and AI Automations, plus five more courses.
