@interestingengineering: MIT engineers have built a soft silicone sheet laced with 14 zig-zagging optical fibres that rebuilds its own 3D shape on screen as it bends, folds and twists. Each fibre is roughened on one side, so changes in the light it carries reveal which way and how far it bends, and the sheet kept working even after a hole was punched through two of its fibres. The study, by Qifan Yu, Nina Cao and Kaitlyn Becker, appears in Advanced Intelligent Systems.
