downstate voters having zero clue who they pay property taxes to will never not be shocking to me.

People in Illinois are the most taxed people in the country. How can other states do it and be in the black and every year? We’re in the red and they keep raising our taxes that’s called corruption.

We can cut waste spending by the state, 20% to all state congress and senate.. stop spending $ on non US citz and us the state taxes to fund all k-12 schools.. drastically decreasing property taxes boosting the economy with families have more $ to spend

in my state, I figured out that replacing property taxes with an increase in sales tax means we would go from 6% to 11.25%. yeah, that'll work out.

Very misleading. The state controls how much funding municipalities receive and when they receive it. When the state runs short on money due to overspending, municipalities are often left to cover the shortfall or make cuts to essential services. Ironically, this is the very same issue Pritzker complains about when arguing that Trump isn’t providing enough federal funding to Illinois.

the Illinois politics mainly the Dems have taxed the Illinois citizens into oblivion. property taxes are the highest in the country our gas is more expensive then all around us. they want to tax anything and everything even a dang fire pit tax saying you have to file a permit each time you want to have a fire in your fire pit. they want to tax the drivers for every mile they drive as well. and they want downstate to support Chicago with everything

So Illinois eliminated the grocery tax.. great right? Except for local towns/municipalities raised their grocery tax to make up for what the state did. So in the end local elections are very important to vote in.

almost half of our IL budget goes to people who dont even work anymore. Pensions. Thats the issue. And years of corruption in the PAST. If someone has an idea on how to make up a shortfall without tax revenue please run for governor

I keep hearing about how the state of IL has nothing to do with local taxes and that’s false. They have unfunded mandates that Springfield makes us pay. Things like the county sheriff pay, that’s mandated by Springfield. And the local school/county/police ect workers pension plan is another thing that’s unfunded by the state of IL but mandated we pay through property taxes.

State decisions do play a roll though. Because of our pension problem, the state can’t send enough to public’s schools so local areas increase property taxes to make up the shortfall. Decreasing property taxes will not fix this. This problem was created many years ago. Unfortunately we must pay the price of prior generations much like some future generation will with our federal debt

The state sets the multiplier on your local taxes so they do have some control on what you pay!
