@natekrono: 🦶🏽 CLUBFOOT: 4 deformities, one correction approach! 🩺 Clubfoot (congenital talipes equinovarus) has 4 key components: CAVE 👇🏽 🔹 Cavus: High arch of the foot 🔹 Adductus: Forefoot turns inward 🔹 Varus: Heel turns inward 🔹 Equinus: Foot points downward 💡 How do we correct it? The Ponseti method is the gold standard for initial treatment. It involves gentle manipulation and serial casting, followed by an Achilles tenotomy when indicated, and maintenance with a foot abduction brace to reduce recurrence. Early treatment makes a huge difference! 🩺👣 Save this for your next medical school revision and share it with a future doctor! #Clubfoot #MedicalEducation #MedStudent #Orthopaedics #drnathanrono
Remember to tell them that correction of clubfoot is a gradual process that may take several years to achieve and maintain. After serial casting, a minor surgical procedure called Achilles tenotomy may be performed to release the tight Achilles tendon. Afterward, a Dennis Browne bar and boots (foot-abduction brace) are used for the first 3 months, worn for at least 23 hours daily. The brace is then continued according to the prescribed maintenance schedule to prevent recurrence.
