When The Rolling Stones were recording “Gimme Shelter” in 1969, the world around them was becoming increasingly unsettled. The Vietnam War was raging. Protests were spreading across the United States. Violence was appearing on television and in newspapers, and the optimism associated with the 1960s was beginning to disappear. Keith Richards was staying at a house in London when he began playing the guitar part that would become the foundation of “Gimme Shelter.” He later described the song as coming together while he was experimenting with a guitar riff during a storm. Mick Jagger began working on the lyrics, turning the music into something much darker. Instead of writing a traditional rock song about romance or rebellion, the Stones created a song about fear, violence and a world that seemed to be falling apart. But the recording still needed something. A female voice. They brought in Merry Clayton, a Los Angeles singer, to perform the powerful female vocals near the end of the song. She arrived at the studio late at night, reportedly coming straight from home after receiving the call. Then she started singing. Her voice completely changed the recording. When she reached the famous section where she repeatedly sings about murder and rape being only a shot away, her voice cracks with emotion. It wasn't polished in the way a typical studio vocal might be. That was exactly why it worked. The recording captured something raw. Clayton's performance became one of the most unforgettable guest vocal appearances in rock history, and the Stones built the entire song around that sense of danger and urgency. “Gimme Shelter” opened the 1969 album “Let It Bleed,” and it quickly became one of the defining songs of The Rolling Stones' career. More than half a century later, it still sounds unsettling. The guitars sound like an approaching storm. The drums feel like something is coming. And Merry Clayton's voice sounds like someone desperately trying to warn you before it's too late. The Rolling Stones didn't set out to write a song that would define the end of an era.
