Angelina Jolie’s 2015 art-house drama movie By the Sea grimly foreshadowed the real-life fracturing of her marriage to Brad Pitt. While the film explores a fictional, toxic 1970s marriage plagued by emotional distance and hidden trauma, the onscreen depiction of a volatile, physically aggressive dynamic in a bathroom eerie mirrors the explosive cross-complaints later filed by Jolie. Though the couple insisted during promotional tours that they were still happy together, and the cinematic assault and marital dysfunction were purely fictional, the striking parallels between the claustrophobic hotel room conflict and the confined, violent airspace incident one year later in 2016, retroactively reframed the film as a haunting prelude to their highly publicised divorce. In 2018, a court ordered Jolie to tell her children they were safe with Brad, emphasising that a strong relationship with him was vital. The judge warned Jolie that restricting Brad's access, including court-mandated unmonitored calls, could cost her primary physical custody. Did she commit an act of vindictive spite for revenge? Did she lie to get her own way? Parental alienation destroys everyone, especially the children. Is she a Modern Medea?
