There’s something strangely heartbreaking about realizing that the way you treated a collection of stickers as a child might actually explain how you’ve approached so many things in your life. Because think about it. You had these beautiful little stickers that you absolutely loved, and instead of enjoying them, you kept saving them for some imaginary perfect moment. You couldn’t put them on your notebook because what if you got a better notebook next year? You couldn’t stick them on your water bottle because what if you eventually wanted them somewhere else? So you carefully placed them back inside their little collection, promising yourself that one day you’d find somewhere worthy of them. And then years passed. The notebooks changed, the water bottles disappeared, and those stickers stayed exactly where they were, waiting for a perfect opportunity that never actually came. 😭 And the older you get, the more you realize that this habit doesn’t necessarily disappear. It just starts showing up in different parts of your life. You save your favorite clothes for special occasions, but somehow every occasion feels slightly too ordinary. You buy a beautiful journal and become afraid to write on the first page because you don’t want to ruin it. You take hundreds of pictures but hesitate to post the ones you love because you’re worried you’ll eventually find something better. You wait to start a hobby until you have the perfect equipment, wait to pursue a dream until you’re completely prepared, and sometimes even hesitate to tell somebody how much they mean to you because you’re afraid of choosing the wrong moment. And suddenly you realize how much of your life has been spent trying to avoid regret instead of actually experiencing things. The saddest part is that you’re not necessarily afraid of enjoying something. You’re afraid of enjoying it incorrectly. You’re afraid that somewhere down the road, you’ll look back and wish you had made a different decision. So you keep your options open, protect everything that feels precious, and convince yourself that waiting is the safest choice. But sometimes waiting becomes its own kind of loss. Because the sticker you never used didn’t become more valuable just because it stayed untouched. The beautiful outfit you never wore didn’t create any memories hanging inside your closet. And the opportunities you kept postponing didn’t necessarily become easier to take with time. Of course, being thoughtful about decisions isn’t a bad thing. Some choices deserve patience, planning, and careful consideration. But not every little moment needs to carry the weight of your entire future. Sometimes you’re allowed to make a decision simply because it makes you happy right now. You’re allowed to use the nice things, take the pictures, write on the first page, and enjoy something without knowing whether you’ll eventually wish you’d done it differently. Maybe you’ll make mistakes. Maybe you’ll change your mind. Maybe you’ll look back and laugh at some of your choices. But at least you’ll have memories attached to them. Because one of the saddest ways to waste something beautiful is to spend your entire life protecting it from being used. And maybe growing up means finally realizing that the perfect place for the sticker was wherever you would have enjoyed seeing it.
