I had a patient who presented term and SROM with a doula. They declined augmentation and opted for nipple stim, movement, intermittent monitoring which was fine. After 36 hours the midwife discussed augmentation and closer monitoring. The DOULA refused, spoke over mother and told the mother she just needed to rub castor oil on her abdomen to start labor. After 48h, the midwife told the patient that she was no longer a low risk patient and that she was going to transfer her care to the physicians. Mom then agreed for augmentation. One thing that struck me as extremely odd with her birth plan was the line " if in the event that my baby dies". That is the one and only time I ever saw that in a birth plan.

As a L&D nurse. I agree with this message! I am grateful for doulas and the work they do, but I have come in contact with doulas who do these exact things! I also don’t like the lingo while in labor “ remember what we talked about that’s not what you wanted etc” yes there were conversations had prior to, but it is important for moms to understand that they are allowed to change their mind about anything!! It’s about support in a constantly fluid process that can change at anytime.

Yes. Also person size. A small 5-0 girl with a big 6’5 Pacific Islander. Listen…. This is not going to go well. I learned in midwifery school that my job is to educate and support. I should fight as hard for someone who wants an elective primary section, as I do the woman that wants to wait till 42 weeks. Birth is beautiful if mom is empowered and educated.

A doulas job is to SUPPORT what a mom WANTS! Not what the doula wants. Not the doulas preconceived ideas of how each mom should birth. But the mom’s desires. Thank you for this post. Well said 🤗

Amen! Thank you for saying this Erica!!!!! I am tired of fear mongering. It’s a nasty thing to do. I don’t like when my moms come to me and say “tiktok scared me”. It’s harmful and impactful. We are supporting women to have a safe and health birth regardless of the type of birth. We want healthy out comes.

Thank you. The people most critical of a woman’s birthing choices and outcomes (sometimes beyond a moms control) are women.

Thank you for saying this. My first birth I read Ina Mays book and if made me feel so excited to give birth and so confident in my body but I ended up with pre-eclampsia, induction, failure to descend, and c-section. Afterwords I felt so much guilt for not doing something right because all I heard was my body was made for this, pre-e can be mitigated with diet, etc. You are the first time I’ve seen a different message and it’s so important.
