Mom's Money Is Not Your Retirement Plan. and Why are we counting on Mom's money before Mom has even received it? And why do some of y'all know her deposit date better than her doctor's appointments? And why are some family members more concerned about when her check arrives than whether her needs are being met? LET'S HAVE AN UNCOMFORTABLE CONVERSATION. After 17 years working in assisted living, I've learned that financial concerns are not always about how much money an older person has. Sometimes, the question is who is depending on that money. Mom receives her Social Security. Mom receives her pension. Mom receives her retirement benefits. But before she can pay her own expenses, somebody is already waiting for their share. And here's what troubles me. Mom may need new clothes. Mom may need dental care. Mom may need additional assistance. Mom may need money set aside for an emergency. Yet her financial resources are being stretched to support other people's lifestyles. Now, let me be clear. There is nothing automatically wrong with an older parent voluntarily helping an adult child. Some families share expenses. Some adult children provide care and receive agreed-upon compensation. Some parents genuinely enjoy helping their children. But there is a difference between receiving help and feeling entitled to someone else's money. And there is a serious problem when an older adult is pressured, manipulated, or deprived of necessities because someone else expects their check. Being someone's child does not automatically give you ownership of their income. Being named on an account or having power of attorney does not mean you can treat their money as your own. And being family does not excuse financial exploitation. Mom's money belongs to Mom. Her needs, her dignity, her choices, and her financial security must matter. And if Mom can no longer manage her own finances, whoever is legally responsible must handle those funds according to the applicable rules and for her benefit. Let's stop confusing family relationships with financial entitlement. Because one day, Mom may need every dollar that somebody else has already spent. When an aging parent's check arrives, who should come first? And here's the harder question: Have we become so comfortable depending on our parents' money that we've forgotten they still need it themselves? I want to hear from family caregivers, adult children, and assisted living professionals. Let's have a respectful conversation.💜 #FollowMeAcrossTheBridge #FamilyCaregiver #CaregiverSupport #FamilyDynamics #MentalHealthMatters
