Heavy on the fact that it was always the normal things that would set them off which 100% made you know you existing was somehow annoying or problematic

There was never a good time to ask our mother for things after school. Say we need to go to the store to get something for school. If we told her right when she got home, she’d scream at us “ugh can’t I get in the house before you ask me for things? I can’t even relax.” But if we waited until after she had been at home for a bit to ask, she’d say “well why didn’t you tell me when I got home? I’ve already taken my bath, and now you’re telling me you need something.”

I have a strong feeling I have autism and if so, I'm pretty sure mom has it too. She was so overstimulated all the time that she would scream at us from the living room to stop laughing in my brothers' room at the end of the hall. Laughing. We also weren't allowed to talk in the car. She said it was because she wanted to hear if the car was making noises, but then she'd put on her music.

I'm 53, and I STILL find myself not fully shutting doors, canceling alarms, turning off the microwave before it keeps, and overall doing my best to erase evidence of my existence. It's weird how a child's brain can just galvanize in crisis mode, and it's set like that for life. My Boomers are like, "Never happened".

Children are overwhelming. By design they are self centered, unregulated and uncoordinated. I am childfree by choice because I understood this very early and knew I constantly be around that. I think alot of parents literally have no clue or felt they had no other route to take. Its awful.

Does this sound familiar to anyone? What normal things / typical things would trigger or set off your parental figure?

I’m almost 41 and I still clean my house like someone is going to scream at me or throw something at me if I don’t. I don’t wear my hair down in public or in a ponytail (always in a tight bun) because if I have to run I don’t want to be stopped by someone grabbing it and pulling me to the ground then beating me. I still watch facial expressions and tonal shifts so carefully I usually always miss what someone says initially because I need to know how to adapt to the mood for safety…. I am working on it and am just glad my kids don’t have to do that.

they didn't like my greetings like goodmorning, hi, bye etc, dinner prayers, so they would make me repeat 100 times until I cried. It was out of nowhere, just to laugh at me. I was the nicest child. I will never forgive them

I push against this every day in my house because my wife tries to make everyone else conform to her unhealed nervous system before she is willing to take accountability and take care of her needs reasonably before expecting others to stop doing normal innocent behaviors around her. She weapinizes her disability by refusing to accommodate herself. Nif the 6 y/o eating popcorn is driving you nuts, go to our bedroom or put some headphones on. Snapping at and glaring at him for not complying perfectly to an arbitrary demand is not the answer. She also tries to tie basic things the kids should be able to ask of her as a parent to favors from them. "Mom, can you help me with the remote to change this show?" "I will if you stop making annoying sounds." And then she quickly does the thing for him, which forced him to now try to comply with some weird demand with no clear definition or instruction. She doesn't see how abusive that dynamic is. It's death by a thousand cuts to their nervous system and teaches coercive control and blind appeal to authority. I am so lucky to be the primary parent so I can combat her nonsense.

Abusive parents never should have been parents. They were too traumatized/narcissistic/unhealed to be good parents. Parenting should need a license and it should come at a cost. Most parents wouldn’t be such if they had to pay upfront
