If you can't say no without feeling guilty for days, if you agree in the meeting and complain in the car, if you say
Some of you are gonna hate me for what I'm about to say, but being nice isn't the same as being emotionally mature. I know. You've been the nice one your whole life. You never make a scene, you never raise your voice, everyone says you're so easygoing. But hear me out. If you can't say no without feeling guilty for days, if you agree in the meeting and complain in the car, if you say "it's fine" when it's not fine, if you'd rather swallow your feelings than risk someone being upset with you, that's not maturity. That's fear. That's a nervous system that learned being nice keeps you safe. This was true for me. I thought keeping the peace made me a good person, but a lot of the time, I was just avoiding conflict and calling it kindness. Emotional maturity looks different. It's knowing what you're feeling in the moment. It's being able to calmly, respectfully, honestly say, "Actually, that doesn't work for me." It's letting someone be disappointed in you without trying to fix it. It's being kind and honest, not kind instead of honest. So don't worry if this is you, we all gotta start somewhere. You don't have to stop being a kind person. You just have to stop abandoning yourself to be a nice one.
