JB Adamus :
that is a very modern interpretation of it. for the most part, this painting was always thought to be a depiction of Klimt and his long time lover, not SA. It's allegory representing passion, love and the unity of the masculin and feminine.

honestly, i used to own this painting when i was little. but my mom got rid of it because she said it looked like the man was forcing her there. i always thought so, too. she looked cramped and confined, and i never liked the way he was grabbing her like that ..

good interpretation. I still view this painting as a kiss from a love so deep that it gets them in their knees

idk why people get so defensive over hearing different ways to interpret art and how we do so. Art history is very cool. The history doesn’t have to redefine the painting for you; art is always subjective.

I think it can be interpreted positively about their love as well. It is ambiguous on purpose.

In they knew *your interpretation* of the themes and symbolism. Klimt never has an artist statement, your interpretation is kinda valid but Ivy for example has a lot of symbolism outside Dionysus a lot of which relates to marriage and love.

I think the dark themes are a stretch. The lack of sobriety is connected to being enthralled in love and melting into the other person.

I think the hard lines and strong clutching represents masculinity while the softness and the circled designs are often associated with femininity. It’s a painting representing duality.

The best thing about art is that it touches people differently. Unless the artist themselves explains explicitly it’s all just a guess. I can see how your interpretation makes sense and some others in the comments.
