@interstellarspac: The Sun is our closest star, but beyond it lies a vast neighborhood of stars scattered across the Milky Way. Some are red dwarfs, smaller and cooler than the Sun, while others belong to multiple-star systems that appear as a single point of light in our sky. ⸻ 🌌 Our nearest stellar neighbors are surprisingly close in cosmic terms, yet still separated from us by enormous distances. Even traveling at the speed of light, reaching them would take years. With today’s spacecraft technology, such journeys would take thousands of years or longer. ⸻ ⭐ Beyond our closest neighbors, many other familiar stars are much farther away. Sirius, the brightest star in Earth’s night sky, is about 8.6 light-years away. Procyon is roughly 11.5 light-years away, while Altair lies about 16.7 light-years from Earth. These stars may look like tiny points of light, but each is a distant sun shining across the darkness of space. ⸻ 🔭 Looking at distant stars also means looking into the past. The light reaching our eyes today began its journey years ago, so we see each star as it was when that light first set out toward Earth.
