@vannellecanille: While Gaudí’s work draws millions of visitors every year, some of Barcelona’s greatest architectural treasures remain surprisingly overlooked. The Palau de la Música Catalana is one of them, a riot of colour, stained glass, mosaics and intricate details that feels less like a concert hall than a work of art in its own right. Designed by Lluís Domènech i Montaner and built between 1905 and 1908, the Palau was commissioned by the Orfeó Català, a choral society seeking a home for Catalan music and culture. During a period of renewed Catalan cultural identity, the architect imagined a space where music, nature and architecture would come together. The result is one of the finest expressions of Catalan Modernisme, crowned by a spectacular stained-glass skylight that floods the concert hall with natural light. But the Palau is only part of his legacy. Domènech i Montaner also designed the Recinte Modernista de Sant Pau, a former hospital complex that transformed healthcare architecture into something luminous, human and beautiful. Both are UNESCO World Heritage Sites, yet they often remain in the shadow of Barcelona’s more famous landmarks. Today, the Palau de la Música Catalana is still a working concert hall, hosting performances in a setting as extraordinary as the music itself. A masterpiece that deserves to be seen, heard and celebrated just as much as the city’s better-known icons.
