@drgreghealth: Here are three foods I would absolutely never touch when dealing with Hashimoto's thyroiditis. I've been a functional medicine doctor for more than 25 years, and remember, Hashimoto's is not a thyroid problem. It is an immune system problem that happens to attack the thyroid gland. These three foods feed that attack. Food number one: Gluten. Research points to molecular mimicry. Gliadin, a protein in gluten, structurally resembles thyroid tissue closely enough that an immune system already primed to attack the thyroid can get triggered by it too. Removing it is one of the most well-supported dietary interventions in Hashimoto's management. Food two: Conventional dairy. For many Hashimoto's patients the proteins in standard dairy drive the same kind of inflammatory cross-reactive response that gluten does. Different protein, same confused immune system. Food three: Soy, and heavily processed iodine-fortified foods. Soy isoflavones can interfere with thyroid peroxidase, an enzyme your thyroid needs, and excess iodine specifically can escalate autoimmune flares in people who are already sensitive. This is not about fearing food. It is about recognizing that in an autoimmune condition, what you eat is either calming the fire or feeding it. Have you ever removed one of these for long enough to actually know? Find the root. Heal the whole.

I have hashimotos , and I take levothyroxine every day , and apparently it runs in my family because my daughter and two of my aunts have it as well , but my endocrinologist has never told me any of this. And he is an extremely well respected endocrinologist , but i've never heard this.

Can you point to the research that does say gluten needs to be avoided if you aren’t celiac? I haven’t been able to find one.

I was wondering how SERIOUS did we have to be with gluten, like celiac level---or is a gluten free cauliflower crust from a restaurant that can't guarantee no cross contamination still ok enough

So I have hashi antibodies, but my numbers aren’t very high and the doctor said my TSH and all that is still okay. I don’t feel awful, but I don’t always feel great. What symptoms do people notice the most? Am I just living with the symptoms and haven’t noticed because they have crept up over time or I am confusing them with perimenopause? 😩
