1000 goes in. 3 comes out. THREE WHAT? I pressed one button. I didn't divide by anything. I didn't subtract anything. The calculator just looked at 1000 and decided that 3 was an appropriate response. Like... where was the three hiding? This is the problem with learning a button before learning the question it answers. You can press LOG for years, get the right answers on a test, and still have absolutely no idea what the thing is doing. So let's investigate the number we actually typed: 10 × 10 × 10 = 1000. Three factors of ten. In exponent notation, that's 10³ = 1000. Now hide the little 3. 10 to WHAT power gives us 1000? That's what the ordinary base-ten log button is asking. The number it returns is the missing exponent. So log(1000) = 3. The input is 1000. The base is 10. The exponent is 3. Those are three different jobs. In the animation, green tracks the input, blue tracks the base, and orange tracks the exponent. Watch those colors when the equation changes form: the same quantities keep the same jobs. Okay, but one convenient example isn't enough. Try another one. 10² = 100, so log(100) = 2. 10¹ = 10, so log(10) = 1. 10⁰ = 1, so log(1) = 0. That last answer looks illegal if you forget what you're asking. The calculator isn't saying that one equals zero. It's saying that ZERO is the exponent that makes ten become one. And the pattern keeps going. 10⁻¹ = 0.1, so log(0.1) = −1. 10⁻² = 0.01, so log(0.01) = −2. 10⁻³ = 0.001, so log(0.001) = −3. A positive input can produce a negative logarithm. Nothing broke. A negative exponent means a reciprocal: 10⁻² = 1/10² = 1/100. Notice something else: each time the input is multiplied by ten, its base-ten logarithm increases by ONE. Going from 10 to 100 to 1000 produces 1 to 2 to 3. The input changes multiplicatively. The answer tracks the exponent. Now enter something awkward. Say, 500. There aren't a whole number of tens you can multiply together to make exactly 500. But exponents aren't restricted to whole numbers. 10² is 100. 10³ is 1000. So the exponent that produces 500 must be somewhere between 2 and 3. The calculator gives approximately 2.699. That's a rounded answer: 10 raised to that power is approximately 500. The definition never changed just because the answer stopped being a neat integer. Here's an exact fractional example: 10^(1/2) = √10. Therefore log(√10) = 1/2. That exponent means a square root; it isn't asking you to physically multiply together "half a ten." This is why "it counts the zeros" is a shortcut that eventually falls apart. It happens to work for 10, 100 and 1000. It does not explain 500, 0.01 or √10. The missing-exponent question handles all of them. But don't push the pattern one step too far: log(0) is NOT zero. We already used zero as the answer to log(1). No finite real exponent makes ten raised to that power equal zero. Negative exponents can get the result arbitrarily close to zero, but never exactly there. That's why zero is outside the domain of the real logarithm. And the base matters. Log base two of eight is three because 2³ = 8. The same input can have different logarithms when you change the base. For this video, every plain "log" uses base ten. The general real-number rule is: log base b of N equals x exactly when b^x = N, with N positive, b positive and b not equal to one. There's also a reason logarithms turn up in calculations involving multiplication. For example, 100 × 1000 = 100000. Their base-ten logarithms are 2, 3 and 5. The multiplication became 2 + 3 = 5 because multiplying powers of the same base adds their exponents. Logs let us describe the same calculation in terms of those exponents. Now your turn: what are log(10000) and log(0.0001)? Don't just give the answers. Write the power equations that justify them. Once you can do that, the mysterious calculator button has a very specific job. Apparently we do have to keep it. #GravityAssist #Math #Logarithms #LearnOnTikTok
