There’s something so funny about spending years complaining about other people’s questionable dating habits and then suddenly realizing you might be guilty of half of them yourself. 😭 Because you’ll be sitting there telling your friends how much you value communication, consistency, emotional availability, and somebody who actually makes an effort, meanwhile you’ve had a message sitting unanswered for six hours because you got distracted making a playlist called “songs that understand me better than anyone ever will.” And the worst part is that you’re not even necessarily ignoring people because you don’t care. Sometimes you genuinely love your friends, appreciate the people in your life, and want meaningful connections, but the second you get comfortable in your own little world, everybody else temporarily stops existing. You’ll spend three hours listening to music, staring out the window, imagining scenarios that have never happened, and convincing yourself that your life is basically an independent film with an incredible soundtrack. Then somebody texts asking what you’re doing, and you’re like, “Nothing much.” NOTHING MUCH? You just mentally experienced an entire relationship, a breakup, a personal transformation, and a dramatic reunion while listening to the same four songs. 😭 And don’t even get started on romanticizing your problems. Something mildly inconvenient happens, and suddenly you’re walking around like the misunderstood main character of a critically acclaimed drama. Instead of simply being annoyed about a bad day, you’ve somehow turned it into a beautiful chapter of your personal development. You put on your headphones, choose the saddest possible song, and stare dramatically into the distance like somebody’s filming you. Meanwhile, your actual responsibilities are sitting there waiting for you to remember they exist. And the playlist situation might genuinely be the funniest part because nobody has ever been more confident in their musical taste than somebody who has spent forty-five minutes arranging songs in the perfect emotional order. You don’t just make playlists. You curate experiences. You believe the transition between track seven and track eight deserves recognition from the Recording Academy. And if somebody skips a song while you’re playing music in the car, you take it as a personal attack against your artistic vision. But underneath all the jokes, there’s something relatable about realizing that we’re all a little contradictory. We want attention but sometimes disappear. We want people to communicate but occasionally forget to respond. We complain about emotionally unavailable people while spending an entire weekend happily avoiding human interaction. And maybe that’s why it’s important to have a little humility when talking about dating. Because sometimes the behavior we criticize in other people looks surprisingly familiar when we examine our own habits. Of course, there’s a difference between needing personal space and consistently treating people carelessly. But recognizing your own imperfections can make you more understanding of others while still encouraging you to grow. Because sometimes the biggest plot twist isn’t realizing you’ve been dating the problem. It’s realizing you occasionally are the problem, just with a much better playlist.
