Sharon Horgan Says Being in Love Changed How She Wrote Her Onscreen Romance in Youth Sharon Horgan had the idea for her new HBO comedy years ago. She is glad she waited to write it. The Irish writer and actress told PEOPLE the idea for Youth came to her after Catastrophe ended in 2019. She plays Alex, a 50-something divorcée starting a new chapter while her son starts college. Horgan says she was 50 then and wondering what was next. “I was worried that that was it — I was going to be alone,” she says. Then Bad Sisters interrupted that chain of thought. She created and starred in the two-season Apple TV comedy. After it ended, she went back and found the document on her laptop. “I wasn’t alone any longer, so I was able to write about love in a more interesting way,” she says. In a 2025 interview, Horgan confirmed she is dating a man nine years her junior. She also cast him in Bad Sisters, but she didn’t name him. She says writing about love while being in love changed things. “There’s something about writing about it from a perspective of being in love... that allows you to not be so bitter about it.” She says it is still tragic. But there is an understanding in it. “Not everything works out, not everything goes your way.” Horgan also calls casting Rupert Friend as Patrick “a home run.” She says, “We were just beyond lucky to get him.” Then she says, “I’m so glad I’m writing about this now rather than with bitterness in my heart.” Would you have waited to tell your story? #sharonhorgan #youth #new #badsisters #hbo
