I thought he would apologize, but instead, he looked at me and said I wasn’t special and that I played like shit. “I didn’t want to respond because these things happen in football. But then he said something I really didn’t like. He came straight to my face and told me I was nothing without Cristiano Ronaldo, that I was the main problem at Manchester United, and that people like me were the reason the club couldn’t move forward. “Listen, I’m proud to be Portuguese, and I’m proud to have shared the pitch with Cristiano. He’s one of the greatest players this sport has ever seen, and I’ll never deny what he means to me. But that doesn’t mean my entire career belongs to somebody else. I’ve worked too hard to get where I am for anyone to stand in front of me and pretend I’ve achieved nothing on my own. “Then he started talking about Manchester United, saying we’re so shit that we can’t even win five games in a row and that we’ve been like that for two years. That’s when I felt the conversation had gone too far. “I told him, ‘You’ve spent your career here at Leeds, and you’re still trying to prove yourself to a lot of people, so maybe you should focus on the game instead of worrying about my career.’ “I’m not going to sit here and pretend I was calm. I wasn’t. When someone comes directly at you and questions everything you’ve worked for, of course you’re going to react. But at the end of the day, I’d rather answer on the pitch than waste my energy arguing. “We dropped points tonight, and honestly, that draw felt like a loss to me. That hurts more than anything Ampadu said because I came here wanting to win, not to exchange words with another player. “He told me, ‘Next time, we’ll settle it.’ “I just smiled because, for me, there’s nothing to settle.
