Honestly, I hated how Julie treated Shawna because it definitely came from a classist perspective. When you pick and choose who you’re kind to based off their job title, that’s a problem. Here are some quotes: 1. When she was arguing with Ty about how she wants more for their children, she brings up how it’s Shawna that makes him lazy. And I quote “I don’t want suburbia, Ty, we used to look down on that world”. At Max’s birthday party, she literally picks a fight in front of all the children and the adults—not with Ty, but with Shawna. “She’s just someone Ty can be lazy with, this party is so pedestrian”. Shawna responds with “why do I feel like you’re trying to embarrass me?” Julie says “are you embarrassed because I really, really am.” In front of a group of people, including John—Shawna’s husband—she includes him in the conversation and she only talks to him. She scoffs, degrades, or remains silent in almost every conversation between her and Shawna, and Shawna is being just as friendly as Jen and as Christine. These two women are also women Julie does not know, but because they work, with one woman being in marketing specifically, Julie can have conversations without the demoralizing behavior.
