I currently have Republican Tommy Tuberville defeating Democrat Doug Jones by 15.1 percentage points in Alabama's 2026 gubernatorial election. I honestly don't have too much to say about this race because Alabama is such a reliably Republican state. However, I do think Doug Jones is a particularly strong candidate for Democrats, and his candidacy is what makes this race somewhat more interesting than it otherwise would be. Jones previously served as Alabama's U.S. senator for approximately three years after winning a special election in 2017. His victory came during a favorable political environment for Democrats, and he benefited significantly from facing an extremely controversial Republican opponent, Roy Moore. Jones ultimately lost reelection to Tommy Tuberville in 2020, when Republican turnout was much stronger during the presidential election. Interestingly, this year's gubernatorial election is essentially a rematch between the two former Senate opponents. Tuberville is currently Alabama's U.S. senator but is leaving the Senate to run for governor, creating an open Senate seat in 2026. I think Jones' experience as a former senator and his relatively moderate political positions could help him appeal to independents and some Republican-leaning voters. However, Alabama's strong Republican voting history remains a major obstacle for any Democratic candidate. Even during the Democratic wave election of 2018, Republicans comfortably retained the Alabama governorship. That demonstrates just how difficult it can be for Democrats to compete statewide, even in a favorable national political environment. Ultimately, I think Jones will make this race more competitive than it would be with a less established Democratic nominee, but Alabama's Republican advantage is simply too significant for me to predict an especially close election. I'm currently predicting Tuberville to win by 15.1 points, which would still represent a relatively respectable performance for Jones given Alabama's political landscape. #alabama #dougjones #politics #midtermelections2026 #trump
