We still have the original hand clutch lever but we used a rod with two bolts to extend it

Has nothing to do with the length of handle. Put a good biting ceramic clutch in it with a genuine JD driver...NOT AN AFTERMARKET ONE...lube the pivot points on all 3 clutch dogs and contact points. Longer handle will just break things like the ears on the pulley that the dogs are connected to.
