The Dunes – The glamorous classic The Dunes Hotel opened in 1955 and was one of the Strip’s most elegant resorts. It was themed around the Arabian Nights, with a giant fiberglass sultan on the roof and one of the brightest neon signs in the city. The property also had an 18-hole golf course—almost unimaginable on today’s Strip. In the 1970s, the Dunes was famous for: * The spectacular Casino de Paris showgirls revue. * A sophisticated casino that attracted high rollers. * A quieter, upscale atmosphere compared with some of its rivals. The Dunes occupied the land where the Bellagio now stands. In 1993 it became the first major Strip resort to be imploded, marking the end of an era. ⸻ The Las Vegas Hilton – The entertainment capital The Las Vegas Hilton (originally the International Hotel) opened in 1969 as the largest hotel in the world, with around 1,500 rooms. It represented the future of Las Vegas: huge, modern, and built for conventions as well as tourists. Its biggest claim to fame? Elvis Presley. From 1969 until 1976, Elvis performed hundreds of sold-out shows there. His residency became one of the most legendary in entertainment history. If you visited Vegas in the early 1970s, this was the place to see him. The Hilton also featured: * one of the world’s largest showrooms; * major boxing events; * celebrity headliners almost every week. Today, it’s known as the Westgate Las Vegas.
