@historicalworld25: Rustam Nabiev’s Extraordinary Everest Climb Without Prosthetic Legs Russian mountaineer Rustam Nabiev reportedly reached Mount Everest’s summit on May 20, 2026, completing an extraordinary climb without legs or prosthetic limbs. The 34-year-old relied on his arms to navigate the mountain, which rises 8,848.86 meters above sea level. His achievement drew attention to the physical demands of mountaineering and the adaptations required to tackle extreme terrain without the use of legs. A Mountain Climb Unlike Any Other Nabiev began his final ascent on May 13, reaching the summit seven days later. One of his biggest obstacles was the Khumbu Icefall, a dangerous section filled with crevasses, unstable ice, and ladders. Reports say crossing it took approximately 15 hours. Moving through such terrain required him to pull and maneuver his body using his arms while negotiating fixed ropes, ladders, and steep icy sections. Reaching the summit was a major milestone, but descending safely remained another critical part of the expedition. At the top, Nabiev shared a photograph holding a plaque with the words: “To those who thought that life ended after the fall. Rustam Nabiev, Everest 2026.” The Accident That Led to a New Beginning Before becoming a mountaineer, Nabiev served in Russia’s Airborne Forces. On July 12, 2015, a military barracks collapsed at a training center near Omsk, killing 24 people. Nabiev survived after spending around seven hours trapped beneath the rubble. His injuries required doctors to amputate both legs, beginning a long period of surgery, recovery, and adjustment. He eventually returned to an active lifestyle and began pursuing demanding physical challenges. Mountaineering became one of the ways he tested his abilities and worked toward new goals. Building Experience on High Mountains Everest was the culmination of several years of climbing. In 2020, Nabiev climbed Mount Elbrus, Mount Kazbek, and Mount Ararat. The following year, he reached the summit of Manaslu, an 8,163-meter peak in the Himalayas. That achievement placed him among the small number of double amputees to summit a mountain higher than 8,000 meters. He arrived in Nepal in April 2026 to prepare for Everest, celebrating his 34th birthday at Base Camp before continuing the expedition. How His Achievement Differs From Previous Everest Climbs Everest has previously been summited by climbers with amputations, including Tom Whittaker in 1998, double amputee Mark Inglis in 2006 using prosthetic legs, and Hari Budha Magar in 2023 using specialized prostheses. Nabiev’s reported ascent stands apart because he climbed without legs or prosthetic limbs, relying on his arms for movement. Everest remains dangerous even for highly experienced climbers. Extreme altitude, freezing temperatures, unstable ice, and exhaustion make both the ascent and descent demanding. Nabiev’s journey—from surviving a life-changing accident to attempting one of mountaineering’s greatest challenges—offers a striking example of how people can develop new ambitions after unexpected setbacks.
