Yes, that’s part of the lure but it was a serious of events that the slogan “fighting Irish” became official 1927. It originally started as “eleven fighting Irishman when ND beat Michigan in football in 1909.

They started calling Notre Dame the Fighting Irish as early as 1909, but it was used as a derogatory towards Irish Catholics. The nickname slowly caught on, but after the students fought the kkk (whom hated Irish Catholics), was officially approved by Father Walsh as their nickname.
