A convicted terrorist who ran a Taliban recruitment cell from a Manchester market stall while serving four life sentences has died behind bars. Munir Farooqi died at maximum-security HMP Frankland in County Durham, prompting an independent investigation by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman. Farooqi travelled to join the Taliban following the September 11 attacks, was captured in Afghanistan in late 2001, and later returned to Manchester. Operating from an Islamic book stall in Longsight and using his family home, he produced extremist propaganda and attempted to radicalise recruits to fight abroad. His targets included undercover counter-terrorism officers, whose covert work brought down the terror cell. In 2011, a Crown Court judge branded Farooqi a dangerous extremist, handing him four life sentences with a minimum term of nine years.
