Melbourne, Victoria, Australia — Orthopaedic surgeon Dr Stewart Proper had his medical registration cancelled following professional misconduct findings by the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT). The case involved an incident in an operating theatre on October 13, 2017, and a separate series of abusive online posts targeting psychiatrists who had been involved in his mental health treatment. During a lengthy elbow revision operation, a surgical drape reportedly moved towards the patient’s wound, raising concerns about maintaining a sterile field. Dr Proper responded with an abusive threat directed at a colleague, according to the tribunal’s findings. He later apologised for the outburst but argued that his reaction was intended to protect the patient. The tribunal acknowledged the high-pressure circumstances but found that his conduct was unacceptable and could undermine patient safety by making medical staff afraid to raise concerns. The case also involved social media posts published between August 2018 and November 2019. During that period, Dr Proper targeted three psychiatrists through platforms including Facebook, Twitter, Google reviews and RateMDs. The tribunal described the online conduct as a prolonged campaign of denigration that damaged public confidence in the medical profession. Dr Proper disputed the basis for his earlier involuntary mental health admissions and blamed others for what had happened. However, the tribunal criticised his lack of insight into his conduct and his tendency to place responsibility on other people. The tribunal initially treated the operating theatre incident separately, imposing a reprimand and suspension. The online attacks led to the more serious outcome: cancellation of his medical registration until at least October 2025, according to published reports. WHY THE CASE MATTERS The findings highlight that medical professionals are expected to maintain appropriate conduct both during patient care and outside the workplace. Abusive behaviour towards colleagues can affect teamwork, communication and patient safety. #Australia #Victoria #StewartProper #MedicalNews #japd
