@thesilentstructure: There is a place in the Florida Keys where the road you drive was once a railroad — and the rails are still there, rusting quietly beneath your wheels. 🌊 In 1905, Henry Flagler — the Standard Oil co-founder who had already built Florida's east coast — looked at 156 miles of open ocean between Miami and Key West and decided to lay a railroad across it. Engineers called it impossible. Newspapers called it "Flagler's Folly." For seven years, thousands of men dredged, piled, and bridged their way across the sea: more than sixty bridges, seventeen miles of track standing over open water. On January 22, 1912, the first train rolled into Key West with the 82-year-old Flagler aboard, and the world called it the Eighth Wonder of the World. For 23 years, trains like the Havana Special carried passengers across those brilliant seas. Then came September 2, 1935. The Labor Day Hurricane — winds near 200 miles an hour, the most intense hurricane ever recorded at a U.S. landfall — tore forty miles of track into the sea. More than 400 souls were lost. Bankrupt and in receivership, the railroad never rebuilt. Florida bought the roadbed for $640,000 and paved it into the Overseas Highway. Today the trains are gone, but the bridges remain. Walk the restored Old Seven Mile Bridge, reopened to walkers and cyclists in January 2022, and you will find Flagler's original rails still serving as guardrails. The Bahia Honda trusses rust in the salt air. The surviving spans are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. 🎥 THEN: AI reconstruction of the railway era (1912–1935) | NOW: the corridor today (photo: U.S. Federal Highway Administration, public domain) Would you ride a train across the open ocean?
