Rather than a genuine spiritual connection, scrupulosity creates an agonizing, hyper-vigilant state where the brain treats minor infractions, creative thoughts, or normal human impulses as catastrophic moral failures. The compulsive loop relies heavily on constant confession, seeking spiritual reassurance, and rigid behavioral avoidance to eliminate uncertainty about one's goodness. Because these behaviors are often praised on the surface as piety or strong ethics, the internal torture remains invisible for years.
