He had a medical career, a girlfriend, a future, and one thing he loved: surfing. But Guido Schäffer could not shake one question. Was God asking him to give it all to Him?... ⤵️ Guido became a doctor in Brazil and cared for people with AIDS, the poor, and people living on the streets and in Rio’s favelas. The more he served people who were suffering, the deeper his faith became. He helped start the “Fire of the Holy Spirit” prayer group, and his life centered more and more on the Eucharist, Scripture, prayer, and service. But another call kept growing. After taking part in events connected to St. John Paul II’s 1997 visit to Rio and later making a pilgrimage to Europe, Guido discerned a call to the priesthood. So he left the future he had planned, including his relationship, and entered formation. Yet he did not stop being Guido. He kept caring for the sick, evangelizing, and surfing. He even prayed with people before surf lessons. By 2009, Guido was in the final steps of preparing for priestly ordination. But on May 1, while surfing at Recreio dos Bandeirantes, he was struck in the head by a surfboard, lost consciousness, and drowned. He was only 34. It looked like his mission had ended. But people kept sharing the story of his prayer, joy, sacrifice, and love for the poor. His cause for sainthood opened, and in 2023 Pope Francis recognized that Guido had lived the Christian virtues heroically. He was declared Venerable. Today, many call him the “Surfer Angel.” He is not yet Blessed or a canonized saint. A recognized miracle through his intercession is still needed for beatification. His life leaves us with one powerful truth: holiness does not mean becoming less human. It means giving Jesus your work, your gifts, your passions, and your whole life.
