💜🌈 Sensory Processing Differences Series — Part 8: How to Support Sensory Differences Supporting a child’s sensory needs isn’t about changing who they are. It’s about understanding how they experience the world and creating environments where they can feel safe, connected, confident, and supported. 🧠✨ Every child’s sensory system is unique. What feels calming to one child may feel overwhelming to another—which is why support should be individualized, flexible, and responsive to the child. 🏡 At home, support might look like creating a cozy regulation space, using visual routines, preparing for transitions, offering movement opportunities, reducing overwhelming sensory input, and giving meaningful choices. 🏫 At school, it might include movement breaks, quieter seating options, clear visual instructions, appropriate sensory tools, flexible ways to participate, and time to regulate before returning to learning. Most importantly, we can: 💚 Know the child — Notice their sensory preferences, strengths, and patterns. 📅 Create predictability — Routines and preparation can reduce uncertainty. 🧘 Offer regulation options — Give access to strategies that help their body feel organized and comfortable. 🌱 Give choices — Choice supports autonomy and self-advocacy. 🤝 Build connection — Regulation often begins with feeling safe and understood. 💬 Listen and believe — A child’s experience of a sensation is real, even when we experience it differently. ⭐ Celebrate strengths — See the whole child, not only their challenges. 👨👩👧👦 Work as a team — Families, educators, therapists, and children can collaborate to discover what works best. Instead of asking, “How do we stop this behavior?” try asking: 💭 “What might this behavior be communicating, and what support could help?” Sensory support isn’t about making every child tolerate the same environment in the same way. It’s about providing access, understanding, connection, and opportunities for self-advocacy. 💜 ✨ Different doesn’t mean less. When we support sensory differences with curiosity, compassion, and respect, we help children participate in the world while honoring who they are. Every child. Every sense. Every version of them matters. EAVY OT Space | Embracing All Versions of You #neurodivergent #autism #SensoryRegulation #sensoryplay #SensoryProcessing
