French Mayor Bernard Baudoux said he was helping Palestinian farmers harvest olives in solidarity with the community when settlers violently threw him to the ground. Belgian, French and Polish diplomats were also caught up in the attack, while Israeli activists who arrived at the scene were reportedly assaulted. The incident comes amid heightened settler violence during the annual olive harvest, a vital source of income for Palestinian families whose access to farmland is often restricted or threatened. A day earlier, settlers severely beat Washington Post photojournalist Heidi Levine while she was covering another attack on Palestinian farmers, leaving her with multiple fractures. U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee called the assault a "despicable act of terror" and demanded the attackers be arrested and prosecuted. Israel's foreign minister condemned the attackers as rioters, while Palestinian officials said the assault reflected the violence Palestinians face daily.
