Us has the first landing on the moon. USSR has first satellite, first man in space, first hard landing on moon, first soft landing on moon, first remote rover on moon. We tend to over emphasize one because we did it.

Also claiming Sputnik as the first satellite is funny because you have to use the most basic definition since Sputnik was basically just a metal ball they shot into space, America actually had the first genuinely useful satellite
