@amieinchina: There are a lot of sponsored videos out there pushing various ‘must have’ apps in China, but honestly just the 3 basic ones will be fine for 90% of travellers. It doesn’t need to be too complicated as you can do so much already within Alipay and WeChat! PS: I’m building an in-depth travel guide on everything I know about China after travelling there over 29 times and marrying into a Chinese family. Join the waitlist in my bio and you will get a discount when it’s released!! #travelchina #china #traveltips #apps #alipay
is the lack of a chinese number going to bar us from a lot of functions in wechat/alipay?

I didn’t use WeChat a single time in the 1 month I was in china… I think it also really depends on what you do there but as long as you have one of the two, Alipay and WeChat, you’re fine

Yeah well I would certainly add to the list eSIM (check out your phone supports eSIM) preferably with a VPN, also a separate VPN if you want to surf via wifi your regular surfing sites. Then Google Lens and Google Translator

This information is 100% accurate. You don't even really need WeChat, you could just get by with Alipay, but it's good to have both.

I AGREE having been 6 times but also get a VPN download before you go. Personally I used Express VPN, 90% good

Can you do a video on foolproof ways to get around the Great Firewall? I spent 6 hours in Shanghai airport and my android phone was totally bricked, only thing that worked was WhatsApp. I had to message my dad to find out what the exchange rate was, it was that bad. It's made me a bit worried about going to China tbh.

just long press the home button on your phone the click on the translation icon, it translates anything that is on your phone screen

I will say Apple Maps worked 99% of the time (didn’t work well when I needed to find 1 business in particular inside of say a mall and the Chinese map gave me the actual floor said business was on) but I also had a separate phone for my Chinese SIM card just fyi! But yes, WeChat and Alipay are you biggest friends while in china!
