Even hair that looks healthy can respond differently from section to section. Each area needs its own assessment of resistance, condition, and previous chemical exposure. I often compare finding the right chemical balance to seasoning food. Too much or too little changes the outcome. The comparison helps explain balance, although pH alone does not tell us a formula’s full strength or how the hair will respond. Through study, research, and observation, I have developed my own formula language: mixing ratios, section-by-section decisions, processing times, and recorded results. My records guide me, and strand tests help me check the response of unfamiliar or compromised hair before proceeding. Experience gives me a foundation; testing helps me decide whether that foundation fits the person in my chair. Healthy, damaged, severely damaged, and bleached hair each require individual judgment. Bleached hair also requires careful assessment—strand testing helps determine whether treatment is suitable and what limits must be respected. Formula selection, processing time, moisture control, temperature, tension, and thorough neutralization all work together. My aim is hair that feels smooth and supple, moves naturally, and reflects light beautifully, with careful attention to its condition. For suitable clients, maintenance appointments may be around four to six months apart, often about twice a year. Timing varies with new growth, hair condition, and home care. When the previously straightened lengths remain in good condition, treating only the new roots may be enough.
