Sanders made the admission during our extended sit-down interview as part of the two-hour MS NOW special called, Long Game: The Bernie Sanders Effect. I asked Sanders why he has historically had a hard time connecting with black voters and especially black woman voters who have said that they felt he prioritized his focus on class, while downplaying the pernicious impact of race on their lives — sometimes dismissing it as “identity politics.” I must say, when I ask questions like this, I am prepared for the interviewee to get reflexively defensive. The senator did not do that, and instead issued a straightforward apology and said he had learned hard lessons about this very challenge in his two runs for President and in the current political cycle. An apology alone may not change people’s minds. There are no do overs. But it was a rare and direct admission. Thank you for asking this question this directly. Bernie Sanders’ record of refusing to truly understand racism or sexism is the reason I cannot support him. If this softball question was supposed to be an opportunity for him to clean up his track record on these issues, he did a terrible job. He’s such an ego maniac, he understood a question about the role of racism in life in the U.S. to be a question about whether/not he did a good job getting older women voters? He answered it with a “I’ve always done a good job” / “ look at my civil rights era, protest photos” / “ I have black friends“ kind of answer? He simply does not understand. He does not believe that sexism or racism are significant problems. It’s infuriating. He created Bernie Bros. And Bernie bros elected Trump.
