My itinerary for your Christmas trip to Colorado. 🎄❄️👌🏻 Recommended route: 6 days / 5 nights BASES: Vail is total luxury, but Breckenridge and Winter Park are 1-1.5h from each other. Cripple Creek, Pagosa and Durango are further south, so we'll leave them for the second half. DAY 1: Arrival in Denver + Winter Park - Christmas Tubing Arrive in Denver and drive 1.5h to Coca Cola Tubing Hill. It's at Winter Park Resort. • It has several tracks with banked curves, you can go solo or linked with friends. • Price: $44 off-peak day, $49 peak hour. It's for 1 hour and they take you up with a conveyor belt. • Opens in December, you have to book in advance because it gets full. • Night in Winter Park or drive 1h 20m to Vail to sleep. DAY 2-3: Vail + Breckenridge - Your dream hotel + sleigh Check-in at Four Seasons Resort and Residences Vail. DAY 2-3: Vail + Breckenridge - Your dream hotel + sleigh Check-in at Four Seasons Resort and Residences Vail. At Christmas they do WhoVail: a giant gingerbread house where kids can go inside, carols, famous "Haute Chocolate" hot chocolate at The Remedy Bar, and a fireplace in every room. It's the perfect base. From Vail to Breckenridge it's only 45 min: • Golden Horseshoe Sleigh Rides • The one you mention: 40 min (actually 30 min scenic + photo time), includes hot chocolate and blankets. $65 adults, $55 children. • They have a private ride and a package with dinner at a mining camp ($150) with a show. Ideal at sunset. • Tip: dress in layers, hat, waterproof gloves. It's cold but the views of the White River National Forest and Swan River Valley are 100% worth it. Night back in Vail to enjoy spa and Christmas dinner. DAY 4: Cripple Creek - Ice Castles Drive from Vail to Cripple Creek ∼2h 15m. • Ice Castles • Exact address: 339 Irene Ave. They are castles handmade with icicles, tunnels, ice slides and LED lights. There is a Polar Pub with drinks. • Season: normally opens from late December to early March. In 2024-2025 it opened December 19. Tickets from $23 children / $29 adults on peak day. They sell out fast, buy at icecastles.com. • The floor is slippery, wear boots with good grip. Go at sunset for photos with lights. • Night in Colorado Springs or Cripple Creek. DAY 5: Pagosa Springs - Hot Springs to thaw out Drive ∼3h 30m southwest to Pagosa Springs, Colorado. • The Springs Resort & Spa or Pagosa Hot Springs: deepest hot springs in the world, with mountain views. They have 25 pools of different temperatures, spa, cafés. • Perfect after days in the snow. Book a day pass. • Night in Pagosa Springs. DAY 6: Durango - Winter Train (the grand finale) Drive 1h from Pagosa to Durango. • Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad • The Cascade Canyon Winter Train leaves from Durango Depot at 9:15 AM, it's a 5-hour round trip in heated cars through the San Juan National Forest following the Animas River. It makes a 60 min stop in Cascade Canyon for photos, a walk by the river or lunch by the campfire. • Price: $96 - $214 depending on class. Operates from mid-November to late April. • From Durango you can return to Denver (6h) or fly from Durango-La Plata. Local tips for Christmas: 1. Book NOW: Sleigh rides and tubing sell out 2-3 weeks before Christmas. Ice Castles ticket sales open December 2. 2. Winter driving: Bring AWD/4x4, I-70 and US-160 highways can close due to snow. Check cotrip.org 3. Clothing: Thermal + fleece + waterproof jacket, snow boots, hand warmers. 4. Altitude: Vail is at 2,400m, you will get tired faster. Hydrate a lot. #vailcolorado #breckenridge #colorado #christmas #fyppppppppppppppppppppppp
