First 2-minute bar breakout backtest: Oliver Velez's "first 20 minutes" rule tested on 15 years of S&P 500 and Nasdaq futures, every session 2011-2025. He says that when the first bar of the morning opens above a narrow state (the 20 and 200 moving averages close together on a 2-minute chart), "the odds of follow through to the upside are like 87%", and the same below. We coded it as he explains it: regular hours only, a narrow state is the averages closer than on two thirds of the prior 250 days, buy one tick above bar one's high (sell below its low), stop one tick past the bar, out by 9:50. One contract, $16.50 a round turn. E-mini S&P (ES): 1,166 narrow-state mornings. The first bar's break went his way first 50.5% of the time, not 87%. On any morning, with no averages at all, 48.6%. With the averages far apart, 45.0%. Nasdaq (NQ): 47.9%. Traded his way on ES: 824 trades, 35.6% winners, -$29,746 net (-$43,342 at double costs). A coin picking the side at the same entries: median -$27,550. Lost in 13 of 15 years. His bar filter (a green first bar closing in its top third, red in its bottom third): -$6,705. On NQ the same trade made +$3,886 net and lost at double costs. Walked forward: the best of 36 settings (narrowness, exit time, 1-3R targets), re-picked every year from 2014 on prior years only, lost $11,798 on ES (NQ +$15,658, all from 2019-2025). Not modelled: his stock selection, adding to winners, three-push exits and trailing stops. He teaches it on stocks; this is index futures. Takeaway: don't trust the first bar's break.
