The area code is definitely part of the phone number. Without the area code the phone number doesnt work. So it completes the number. Its part of the number.

Someone can have the same seven digits but won’t have the same area code. I think that’s his point.

The whole phone number is country code, area code, prefix, and line number. A complete US phone number is 11 digits.

Well if there’s multiple people with each phone number then why do you not have to call people multiple times to reach the correct person

Peyton is both right and wrong. Phone numbers were originally only 7 digits and the area code was only for long distance calls. However once the phone system started seeing mass adoption they had to make the area code a requirement on top of adding new overlays (the name for a new area code under an existing one). So yes the area code is a part of your phone number in the modern sense

Australia is technically 11 but the phone systems can sometimes work out some of them automatically. +61(country) x(state code ie 2 is nsw, 4for mobiles) xx (area code) xxxxxx (number). Locally we drop the 61 in place of a 0. Phone systems automatically apply current state codes as where your location is if you don’t type them. So the same landline phone could be dialed with +61269123456, 0269123456 and 69123456 if you lived in the same 69 location.

Thats like saying your national code isnt part of your phone number. All US phone numbers start with 1, our national code.
