With all due respect, I think some of us are not fully understanding Sessinam performance. Her presentation was not just about showcasing the culture of the Volta Region or promoting tourism; it was about addressing the misconceptions people have about the region, particularly the perception that it is full of juju and evil practices.
From the beginning, she introduced the issue through the schoolchildren who were reluctant to visit the Volta Region because of what they had heard about the people. She then took us through the history and migration of the people, explained their traditional beliefs and practices, and showed how these traditions serve moral purposes within certain communities, including promoting truthfulness and accountability.
She even demonstrated how traditional institutions can be used to address wrongdoing, such as lying. Therefore, the point was not simply to display traditional practices but to help the audience understand their cultural and moral significance rather than automatically associate them with evil. The Thanksgiving celebration, the harvest, the traditional display and the other cultural elements were all connected to this broader message. She went further to showcase the region’s educational institutions, food, prominent personalities and festivals to demonstrate that the Volta Region has so much more to offer than the negative image some people have of it. We should also consider the impact of these misconceptions on tourism. When people are made to believe that a region is dangerous because of its traditional religious practices, they may become afraid to visit. Sessinam was therefore trying to educate the audience, challenge these stereotypes and encourage people to appreciate the region for its history, culture and attractions
