@in.good.hands.collective: When to actually start solids with your baby 🌮 Just because your doc gave you the green light doesn’t necessarily mean you need to plop baby in a high chair and start offering finger foods - most 4 month olds don’t have the foundational skills to support themselves upright in a high chair to start solids safely. BUT, introducing allergens early is an important consideration for when to give baby their first foods. Here’s my “meet in the middle” solution for parents who are nervous about starting and/or recognize their baby isn’t ready for a high chair yet. Get this tool in my ‘Feeding Finds’ list in my profile! For more support with feeding, my Starting Solids Guide covers: ✅ When to start & signs of readiness ✅ Proper high chair positioning & troubleshooting ✅ Recommended high chairs & floor seats ✅ Purees vs. baby-led weaning (BLW) ✅ Starter foods & iron-rich foods ✅ Introducing allergens safely ✅ Choking hazards vs. gagging ✅ Feeding schedules by age ✅ Sensory play & oral motor development ✅ Preventing picky eating & mealtime stress ✅ What’s normal vs. concerning ✅ Water intake & teething ✅ Teaching straw & open cup drinking ✅ Utensil skills & product recommendations #startingsolids #babyledweaning #babyfeeding #newparents #firsttimemom

Controversial opinion maybe: they don’t need to be in a high chair to taste food.

Can you show us some simple “recipes” of how you would put allergens in there? Like for shellfish, peanut butter, etc?

With both my kids they took the lead😂. Oldest was sitting on husbands lap and he stole his fish and started munching 7months. Second crawled to the oldest and stole his food 6months. Before that all they had other than milk was wheat or rice porridge.

my pediatrician told me to start allergens closer to 9m because their airways are more open in case of a reaction

I honestly wish people would stop being so obsessed with when everyone else tells them to do stuff with their babies, and just start taking cues from their baby and go from there because raising a baby is not one size fits all it never works the same for each child. There is no fucking answer. Just pay attention to your child and what your child is ready for.

My baby has stomach issues and projectile vomits and couldn’t poop regularly and when I talk to the pediatrician about giving him prunes at four months, she told me no well I ignored her and he’s been on baby food for the past month and he’s been going to the bathroom regularly and he does not spit up anymore and he’s been doing perfectly fine

What if my almost 4 month old can sit up on his own with just back support? He doesn’t slump like that, sometimes he does fall to one side when sitting without support.

My doctor told me to start now at 4 months because she’s high risk. I have A LOT of allergies, including peanuts, tree nuts, and eggs. But she’s not quite there yet. I assumed 5 months was a middle ground. I’m also not sure how to introduce foods I need an EpiPen for, since I don’t even bring them into the house.

i’ve been told by my baby’s pediatrician, at his 4 month check up, to start some solids so mashed banana avocados etc but no allergens so no egg peanut butter etc. what’s the factors swaying u one way or another?

This makes it sound like the reason why therapist don’t want babies to eat before six months is because they can’t sit in the highchair, but really it’s because choking significantly increase when they don’t have adequate head and trunk control. If you provide that proximal support, different story.

Does it make a difference if they were preterm 6 weeks early? A lot of people have opinions about them being delayed.

We’re four months today but no peds appt until nov 6 and he’s nowhere near being able to sit up independently yet. I’ve also heard they should lose the tongue thrust reflex as well? And also that their gut isn’t ready until 6 mos? There’s just soooo much
