@kmscrattch: Trump's $86 million contractor deal raises one question: where is the accountability? "Drain the swamp." "Eliminate waste, fraud and abuse." Fine. Apply that standard to this deal, too. NPR reported October 17 that a federal spending database showed an $86 million award to Guidehouse after the Trump administration canceled local Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program grants. A legal challenge alleges the administration diverted the program's money to that contractor. These grants supported organizations teaching teens and families how to prevent pregnancy through workshops and school programs. NPR reports that the programs must, by law, be evidence-based. Local providers adapted them to their communities. The administration canceled the grants in June, saying they normalized sexual activity for minors. It then sought proposals emphasizing abstinence. A court blocked that replacement process. Now the fight includes a major consulting award. Guidehouse is owned by Bain Capital and describes itself as a "global AI-led professional services firm." NPR identified Cody Inman, a senior official at the HHS agency issuing the award, as a former Guidehouse employee. It reported at least two other HHS officials previously worked there, too. That does not automatically prove favoritism. It absolutely demands scrutiny. Political connections demand transparency, not excuses. Here is an important detail: a procurement report lists the contract's total value at $86,122,613.24, with $69.9 million initially obligated. An $86 million award is not proof that $86 million has already been paid out. That report describes national adolescent social services training, technical assistance and youth engagement support. So the question is not whether the contract has ANY description. It is whether the actual work fulfills Congress's requirements for teen pregnancy prevention. Show the scope of work. Show the funding authority. Explain the selection process, the safeguards against conflicts of interest and how results will be measured. Explain why this approach is better than the local programs that lost their funding. HHS declined NPR's questions, citing litigation. Guidehouse did not respond by NPR's deadline. Rep. Judy Chu said Congress and the public deserve an explanation. That is not proof that Congress received zero documents. It is evidence that a lawmaker is demanding answers. Meanwhile, EyesOpenIowa told NPR its canceled grant represented a quarter of its budget. These decisions affect real organizations and the communities they serve. A consulting contract's polished language does not erase that consequence. Hennepin County is challenging the award, alleging abuse of discretion and action beyond statutory authority. Those are allegations, not a court finding. But taxpayers do not need to wait for a final judgment to demand a defensible explanation. My take: the swamp is not drained by replacing community grants with a politically connected contractor and leaving the public to piece together the justification. If this is better government, demonstrate it. If this protects taxpayers, show the value. Accountability is not a campaign slogan you retire when your administration is the one spending the money. Would you accept this explanation from an administration you opposed? What evidence would make this deal acceptable to you? #GovernmentSpending #TeenPregnancyPrevention #Guidehouse #GovernmentAccountability #TikTokPolitics
