The trick with Kyoto is to go out at 3am. That's also when the ghosts and yokai are out but it's a risk I think is worth taking.

my favorite tip for anyone visiting japan is to make sure u get out of the 3 main cities and to venture out of it (sapporo and okinawa are so much fun and worth paying attention to)

It’s only over crowded at the lower part of fushimi inari. Cuz thats where most tourists with guides go. But if you are on your own, continue going up and there will be lesser and lesser people.

Sorry but Kyoto is so overrated. The River boat ride through Arashiyama is worth it but otherwise nah.
