In 1948, America's biggest Jewish charity split over one question: should charity money buy guns? In January 1948 Golda Meir, then Golda Meyerson, came to America to raise money for weapons for the Zionist leaders in Palestine, the Jewish Agency. In Chicago on 25 January she asked Jewish charity leaders for twenty-five to thirty million dollars in cash. "It means now," she said. In New York she met the men who ran the United Jewish Appeal. As its chief fundraiser, Henry Montor, recalled it in 1975, some objected that a charity should not pay for weapons, not while the United States banned arms sales to the Middle East, and the chairman, former Treasury Secretary Henry Morgenthau Jr., ended it: "You'll have to accept my decision." Her request went into that year's campaign. Half of what she raised would go to Palestine, half to Jews elsewhere. She toured seventeen cities. "We insulted people and we got money," one of the tour's fundraisers, Lou Boyar, recalled in 1976. By the end of February Morgenthau reported the emergency goal of fifty million dollars met. At least half of it was meant for the Zionist leaders in Palestine. Her biographer writes that arms bought in Czechoslovakia with that money began to arrive in early April. On 2 April the ship Nora reached Tel Aviv with 4,500 rifles hidden under onions and potatoes. Within days came Operation Nachshon, the biggest Zionist offensive yet. Its orders called the Palestinian villages along the road to Jerusalem enemy bases. One of them was Qalunya. Its families had already fled. On 11 April Zionist troops took the village under orders to kill everyone they found and blow it up. Over two days they blew up about 55 houses. In New York, a charity said yes to guns. In Qalunya, the families never came home.
