@comewanderwithme7: I'd never stood in front of flossflower before today. Up close it doesn't look like a flower at all — each head is a burst of fine lavender threads, soft as thistledown, with no real petals to speak of. What you're seeing is almost entirely fringe, dozens of tiny florets opening into one cloud. Some heads are still tight purple buds, and right beside them the brown ones have already gone to seed.
