@econwithsarah: 10/18/2026: Why is everyone “so broke” but also out and about spending money? 🤔 I break down three reasons why this might be the case, including rising credit card debt, bankruptcy, inflation, different populations spending money than others, and economic nihilism which honestly deserves its own video…. Let me know if there’s anything I missed. #economics #finance #inflation
It’s also sampling bias. When he’s out to eat, he sees other people out to eat. When he’s shopping, he sees other people with the means to shop. Where does he expect to see the people that can’t afford it?

He also lives in a bubble. I’m 55, single and gay. I make good money. I live in an area of Dallas that has the money to shop, eat, drink etc. I know that I live in a bubble and that there are neighborhoods full of people all around me who absolutely cannot do those things.

I’m defaulting to YOLO. I don’t have kids and I make a good living. At this point what do I have to lose?

A lot of people can’t just stay home. So they go in debt to be out.

Saying Costco and Sam’s Club is packed is hilarious. Like yeah I shop there so I know my limited dollars are going about as far is it can go on what I buy there vs. whatever other store.

I work at a regional food bank. Let me tell you how bad it is - we are rationing food and our pantries regularly have enough food for 25% of the people standing in line

The level of socioeconomic clustering in this country (and globally) makes it exceptionally difficult for anyone to understand how different many, many other people are living. Me and my immediate friends are all doing okay and living comfortable lives without debt, and none of us come from money. That’s not to say we don’t feel the precarity, because we all feel like it’s all an inch from coming down, but like… we’re going to concerts and going out to eat.

Smaller, local stores, shops, and restaurants continue to go out of business; spending is consolidating. I believe Walmart has reported they are seeing higher income shoppers.

It’s selection bias. He likely is financially ok and that allows him to live in an area where most people are doing better financially. I live in an affluent area that is adjacent to an area where extreme poverty is the norm. If I shop and hang out in my neighborhood the economy is booming. If I go a few miles away, it’s a totally different economy.

There’s also a massive divide for those who have a home with a 2.5% interest rate and a low purchase price and everybody else. My friend and I make the same amount and have the same quality of housing, but he has far more disposable income bc his mortgage is way less than my rent.

I think also people have lowered their own standard of living as things became more expensive like a lot more people shopping at aldi instead of whole foods so aldi would still be packed bc a lot of people still have money to spend it’s just not going as far as it used to

I'm not in major debt and I'm still doing activities but I decided to only have one child because I can't afford childcare and can't afford to stay home with a child. I think a lot of young people are decided not to have kids because it isn't tenable anymore.

Very insightful take! It’s always good for me to remember that economics is a social science. It’s all theories based on how people will behave and people change their behaviors all the time.

I remember a marketplace story a couple years ago about how inflation was so high in Argentina that argentines were going out and spending their paychecks as soon as they got it because it’d devalue so quickly and I’m curious if we have any of that going on
