Capturing Mum telling me she loves me. After last week's particularly emotional visit, I really needed to see and hear this today (video recorded last month). ❤️ For the last couple of years, I've consciously chosen to focus on Mum's abilities rather than her losses. To celebrate what she can do, find happiness in our moments together and make beautiful memories along the way. It's an approach that's helped carry me through this heartbreaking journey. But last week broke my heart in a way I hadn't experienced before. 💔 For the first time, I felt Mum might no longer recognise me as her daughter. And despite knowing what Alzheimer's can take away, I simply wasn't prepared for how painful that would feel. Perhaps naively, I'd always believed that even when Mum had forgotten everything else in this world, she'd somehow never forget me. That our special bond and the love we share would always remain familiar to her. I'm going into today's visit feeling hopeful, determined as always to focus on what remains rather than what's been lost. Mum's decline is becoming increasingly painful for me as her daughter. And if the day comes when Mum no longer recognises me at all, I will still know exactly who she is to me. She's my Mum. My beautiful Mum. And nothing, not even Alzheimer's, will ever change that. She may forget who I am, but I'll never forget who we are to each other. ❤️ #anticipatorygrief #alzheimersawareness #caregiver #dementia #alzheimer @Alzheimer’s Research UK
