@cami_ss_9_26: On August 17, 1973, a farmworker named Juan de la Cruz was shot on a picket line near Arvin, California. He was 60. 🕯️ De la Cruz was born in Aguascalientes, Mexico. He came north as a bracero and joined the United Farm Workers in 1965. He worked 14 years on one farm in Arvin. By most accounts, he was picketing with his wife Maximina when shots came from a pickup in a caravan of non union workers. He pushed her to the ground and was hit. On August 20, families walked a candlelight procession through Arvin. A funeral Mass followed, then a long march to the cemetery. Thousands came, including Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta. The union suspended the strike and took the fight to the boycott. In 1975, California passed a law that gave farmworkers secret ballot elections. #mexican #farmworkers #California #History #mexico🇲🇽
